Colonial Architecture (detail)
Cardboard packaging and papier mache
variable (approx 100 units)
Colonial Archtecture is a work about occuping and controlling space. Sheep are usually docile creatures which humans control but in this work the more than 100 sheep control where humans are able to walk, the space we are able to occupy. The work asks viewers to reflect on European colonial occupation of Australia via pastoralism and particularly the claiming of land for sheep. In this image we can see that the hand crafted nature of each sheep gives them a unique "personality" which is somewhat disarming given the viewer is aware they are interacting with a cardboard box and yet there is an "essence of sheep-ness" somewhere within.
